This workshop presents FLEX and how it can be used to help transform an organization from executives to Ops. It is intended for transition agents who either want to learn about FLEX or want to use it for a client or their own company. Participants learn FLEX by walking the creation of a two-day Implementing FLEX workshop tailored for their organization. 

Prior to the workshop

You will be given a self-assessment document that will help you identify strengths and challenges in your organization prior to the workshop and create a roadmap for improvement during the workshop.

  • If you are hosting a workshop, you will have a two to four hour conversation to enable the instructor to understand the situation

  • If you are attending a public workshop, you will have a one half to one hour conversation to review your situation and help you prepare the self-assessment document.

For onsite workshops

The focus of the workshop will be tailored to the needs of the host. The goal is to concentrate on action items within that portion of the value stream that is of interest to the host.

  • How to tell if a suggested change will be an improvement: The Value Stream Impedance Scorecard

  • What to attend to

    • Culture of organization: How it works, tolerance for change

    • Organizational structure

    • The FLEX Pattern Groups

  • Taking your assessment and creating a roadmap

    • Consider the order to maximize benefit

    • Consider any disruption and whether work can be disrupted

Note: The online workshop covers the same materials but in 12 two-hour sessions with live discussion.

After the workshop

During the assessment part of the workshop different solution areas will be identified.


While creating the road map in the workshop these areas will be identified there is no time to go into all of the possible solutions during the workshop. And no need since not all solutions will fit everyone.


Therefore supplemental materials will be made available for people to access after the workshop as they need.

Full Description

This workshop can be offered in several ways: as a live three-day public workshop, as a live three-day private workshop, or as a flipped classroom, online workshop that takes place over six weeks. Each approach uses the same content.

Certification and accreditation

This workshop is the first step for those who want to become FLEX Senior Consultants, those who can teach this workshop, or Implementing FLEX Trainers, leaders of the two-day Implementing FLEX workshop that was created during this workshop.


All participants who complete the workshop receive a certificate of completion.


About FLEX

FLEX is an approach based on Lean-Thinking and patterns that improves an organization’s ability to achieve business agility, the quick realization of value predictably, sustainably, and with high quality.

The process

Here is the process that FLEX uses. 

  1. Understand what the workflow and structure of the organization adopting it should be.

  2. Identify the challenges being incurred in the organization in relationship to this idealized structure.

  3. Identify the potential solutions to the challenges.

  4. Use a basic understanding of systems and Lean thinking to identify the most effective order of adoption given the organization’s culture.

  5. Implement these potential solutions and attend to whether they achieve true improvement.

  6. Study the results, re-plan, and repeat the process.


A collection of patterns

FLEX (FLow for Enterprise Transformation) is a collection of patterns that enable a well-defined, tailored approach for an organization. Its intention is to help guide organizations in achieving business agility, the quick realization of value predictably, sustainably, and with high quality. It accomplishes through a guided process that uses existing process patterns (to avoid reinventing the wheel) and that results in an approach that is contextualized for a particular organization. 

FLEX can be used to start with a tailored framework which is adjusted over time as skills increase, as understanding of the challenges deepen, and as the organization changes.

Think of FLEX as providing a way to create an emerging framework that controls the pace of emergence to what is needed.

FLEX takes advantage of other frameworks and methods by considering them tools to be used as applicable. FLEX can therefore provide a well-defined starting point based on another framework (such as Scrum or SAFe) or based on an analysis of where your organization is and what would be most appropriate for you to use. This enables FLEX to be tailored to any organization.

How to improve starting from where you are is accomplished by attending to established Lean principles to guide the next steps for improvement. This also means that you never outgrow FLEX in that it can automatically incorporate new ideas that are needed
