Why a Kanban Board is a Value Stream Map but a Scrum Board Isn't - and What This Tells Us

Somewhere in the conversation the observation that a kanban board was a value stream map (VSM) was mentioned. A value stream map shows your workflow as well as the time it takes to do the work. A Tale of Two Communities
Posted April 30th, 2009 by alshallI've been active in many different software development communities and user groups over the last 10 years. Some include eXtreme Programming, Design Patterns, Lean, Lean-Agile, Scrum Development and any number of local user groups. I most recently have begun to be active in the Kanban Software Development user group. I have been a member of it for quite some time and know many of the participants, but hadn't been what I would call actively engaged until recently.
