Kanban Resources

We are convinced that Kanban is the next generation of Agile.  Kanban has the following advantages over first generation methods:

  • The ability to do agile when teams are difficult to form due to certain people being in very high demand
  • The ability to control your rate of transition
  • If your teams are overwhelmed with work, the ability to determine what the root cause of the overwork is
  • Getting more insights into the principles of software development
  • Much faster learning by the team once adopted

As with all methods, however, those new to it can use some assistance.  We've set up the Kanban Clinic to help.

Lean Software Development has deep roots. Lean jumped into the software world about a decade ago but has still mostly been considered an extension of the main body of Lean, which is rooted in manufacturing.

One of the purposes of Kanban is to create visibility on where flow is being impeded.  We should know that delays cause waste - see Real Tenets of Lean: Avoid Creating Waste By Eliminating Delays.

While much of the software world recognizes the need to transition to agile methods, it is more difficult in some places than others. This is especially true when critical resources are constrained or true teams do not exist because people are on multiple projects at the same time.
