To win in today’s competitive market requires giving your business the ability to deliver highly profitable products faster than the competition.
Most development organizations aren’t structured to do this because they work on large projects that require long delivery cycles. What is needed is for business and customer value to drive the selection of what you work on and teach the teams how to deliver it incrementally. We refer to this as Enterprise Agility.
Several enterprise areas must be addressed to achieve agility:
- Identifying the products whose creation or enhancement will make the greatest impact on the bottom line of the company
- Matching these product enhancements (projects) to the resources of the organization
- Managing these projects so the product enhancements are achieved with the greatest quality and speed possible
- Organizing the software development teams so they can work with each other in the most effective manner
- Using proper software engineering methods to both support the project management and to ensure the long term viability and low-cost sustainability of the products created
- Creating a learning environment so that the process used is continuously improved
We have found Lean-Agile methods essential in addressing these issues.
