Scaling Scrum With Lean Software And Design Patterns: Going Beyond Scrum of Scrums

Many companies see the advantage of going to Scrum. While they see the possibility of immediate improvement in their process, they question how will they scale this to the enterprise? Depending upon their role, they have different concerns. Product, Program and Project Managers (soon to be ScrumMasters) wonder how they will coordinate resource and product needs across the enterprise. Technical leads and architects wonder how they can create a viable architecture and manage technical dependencies across multiple projects and products.

While Scrum can scale, the methods of Scrum are not enough to enable an enterprise to scale it. The standard method of scaling Scrum – Scrum of Scrum – allows for the successful coordination of several teams on related projects. However, Scrum of Scrums does not address three of the main challenges facing companies going Agile:

  1. how to manage resources across products, projects and teams
  2. how to improve the structure of the organization within which teams work
  3. how to decouple projects on a technical basis

This seminar addresses these issues by first presenting how to use Scrum of Scrums. It then shows how lean’s value stream mapping and focus on fast-flexible flow can have a significant positive influence on the effectiveness and efficiency of Agile teams in the Enterprise. It also discusses why basic queing theory tells us we need to have fewer, shorter, projects in progress at any one time to maximize overall throughput of development. It concludes by giving a high level view (non-technical) of how design patterns can be used to decouple teams that are dependent on each other’s code.

Software development is a blend of enterprise management, project management and code management. Scaling it requires methods that deal with all three of these facets of software development. While Scrum does a great job of the project management aspect of software development, Lean Principles and Design Principles derived from Design Patterns are required to scale Scrum to the Enterprise. This seminar explains both why and how to do this.
