The Values of The Manifesto

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools. 

In 2001 the word 'process' meant something to follow, something imposed on the team. Obviously following a process is not a good thing.

When one takes a systems-thinking approach one appreciates that the workflow we use has a significant impact on the people doing the work.  While we should never ‘follow’ a process, they may guide the potential interactions available between the individuals of the team.  Creating processes that support people can be just as important as trying to otherwise help people directly. Kanban introduced the value of well-defined, explicit workflows. This doesn't mean you 'follow' these workflows. It means the team discusses them and agree to them and changes them when better ways are discovered. In fact, if these workflows aren't changing, the team's not learning. Having well defined workflows enables teams to collaborate better.

Over time we've seen Scrum adopt some of this by now strongly recommending definition of ready and definition of done. The power of a team is often a factor of the quality of the people times the quality of the processes they use. Used properly, these are not opposing issues but rather should be viewed as synergistic.
