The high cost of certification

Certification is a good thing when we certify one's abilities. No one would want to have heart surgery unless the surgeon had been certified. But when there is not an accepted way of doing things, certification often has hidden costs, especially when it is self-certification (eg, Scrum, LKU Kanban & SAFe): I distinquish this from bodies that certify others (e.g., ICAgile because they select the best they can find which increases innovation).

Costs include:

1) A lack of innovation in both content & delivery of introductory classes

2) A focus on the frameworks being certified instead of what people have to do

3) Branding causes resistance to absorb ideas from other brands

Those who do little or no certified training are somewhat forced to innovate & have higher quality courses to offset their lack of certification. In our case we've integrated ATDD in both entry level Scrum & SAFe-team courses. The cost is less with more scope. But the real savings to companies is the improvement of the skills of their people.
