Business Agility and Efficiency

The very excellent book “Team of Teams” by General Stanley McChrystal et. al. describes business agility without using those words. Here’s an excerpt:

"In the wayward swirl, however, the correlation between efficiency and effectiveness breaks down. The Task Force had built systems that were very good at doing things right, but too inflexible to do the right thing."

He goes on to make the crisp distinction between efficiency and effectiveness. 

"Efficiency is doing something well. Effectiveness is doing the right thing."

Business agility is ability to pivot to the best solution fast enough to take advantage of the changing conditions that created the opportunity.

Effective trumps Efficient when change is exponential and solutions must be converged upon instead of planned in detail.

There's the rub. You’ve built your organization around technology specialists who excel at work in their specialty. They do things right. 

But change is the only constant in the business world, and your organization needs to pivot in order to take advantage of opportunities.

You are the leader. How flexible is your technology organization? Your silos are efficient, but are they effective?
