Back Home at Net Objectives: What I’ve Learned

It’s great to be back home at Net Objectives. Al Shalloway has built something special and I’m especially excited to be a part of his growing team once again. Whereas some consulting companies in the Lean-Agile space can implement a framework, Al and his experienced associates at Net Objectives have figured out a transformation process: one that applies decision patterns to an organization that help to root out barriers to Lean-Agile Transformation quickly and that helps discover an effective place to start. This approach leads to a step-by-step transformation of the entire enterprise's ability to determine and deliver new and enhanced capabilities to meet constantly changing business needs.
 
Where have I been for the last five years? After leading large Lean transformations and co-authoring Lean-Agile Software Development: Achieving Enterprise Agility, I had an opportunity to take the CIO seat held by those I had often consulted. I felt strongly that my skills and ability to relate would be greatly enhanced by having to work in (as opposed to working on) a large global enterprise.
 
The good part of consulting is that you get to see a lot of implementations which give you insight on patterns and behaviors. The challenge of consulting too long is a form of “consultants dilemma,” where you can lose touch with the challenges of managing/leading from the inside where influence and trust has to be earned in order to be an effective Lean-Agile leader.
 
Being on the inside of a global software company during a successful Lean-Agile transformation has given me a wealth of knowledge and appreciation for what CIO’s must deal with today, including:
  • CIO’s have a lot more to worry about than just software delivery> There are issues like operational excellence, disaster recovery, information security, vendor management, and more.
  • Most problems in IT Delivery and Operations can’t be fixed by Agile practices alone. They need full business alignment.
  • Lean thinking provides all the right guardrails to allow systems thinking to take root. Once these guardrails are understood, the organization can begin to innovate continuously to improve and the question becomes: Why wouldn’t you do these things?
 
I am excited to be back with many new perspectives and I look forward to helping our awesome clients transform the way they deliver innovation.
